More pets are lost over the 4th of July holiday than at any other time of the year! In fact, July is designated as our Lost Pets Prevention Month. July lst is Pet ID Tag Day. So what better time to talk about the necessity of pet safety for July 4th with good tips and recommendations.

Pet I.D. Tags/Microchips

Have you tagged your furry pal yet? We are hoping so, since July 4th is a huge day for lost and injured pets with all our fireworks and celebrations for Independence Day here in the USA. Hence, the reasoning for our Lost Pets Prevention Month. And that, of course, is why July 5th is our animal shelters’ busiest day of the year.

If you have not micro-chipped your fur bud yet, please make an appointment with your vet and do it now. If you do not have a tag with your info on it in case your fur friend is lost, please do it now. Go to your local pet store; they have machines where you can easily make a tag, or you can order ID tags online.

Celebration Time

If you are going out to watch fireworks, please do leave your pet at home in a secure spot with a toy or two, maybe a treat puzzle, plenty of water, and a comfy place to snuggle down from the noise outside. If you have an anxiety prone pet, try an anti-anxiety vest for a good, warm hug to give them some needed help. You can find vests through Healers Pet Care.com of Vancouver, Washington for a nice lightweight and breathable USA-made product. There are so many natural calming oils, sprays, chews, collars, and hugging vests to use now to help our pets even if they are at home and alone. I have seen pets easily lost when taken to fireworks. They start wandering, shivering…they are scared to death. Remember their senses are stronger than ours. So what we hear is much louder to them and rather terrifying.

Take a look at “Pet Holiday Anxiety Issues” for soothing pet product ideas. On a lighter note, check out fun toys and more USA-made July 4th pet products here.

Our celebration with loud, noisy, and color-bursting fireworks is great for us but not so for our pets. It is a disturbing, frightening and dangerous celebration time for them. The American Humane Association reports that July 5th is our animal shelters’ busiest day of the year. Pets run away, are injured, and are lost from all the noise and flashes of light, and confusing, scary goings on. Following are great safety tips from the American Humane Association and ASPCA.

American Humane Assn/ASPCA Pet Safety Tips

  • Keep your Pet Indoors at All Times
  • Don’t Put Insect Repellent on Your Pet that isn’t Specifically for Pet Use
  • Alcoholic Drinks Poison Pets
  • Going to a Fireworks Display? Leave Your Pet at Home
  • Have Your Pet Properly Identified
  • Keep Your Pet Away from Glow Jewelry
  • NEVER Use Fireworks Around Pets
  • Don’t Give Your Pet “Table scraps”
  • Lighter Fluid and Matches Are Harmful to Pets.
  • Citronella Insect Control Products Harm Pets, Too.
  • Cool it: The Fourth of July holiday occurs during one of the hottest summer periods. Animals are susceptible to heat stroke.
  • Contact a Vet – the best option may be to discuss ways to help your dog with an experienced veterinarian.
  • Secure your dog in the pre-decided place, if applicable.
  • Investigate products that may serve to calm your dog.
  • Stay calm and alert.
  • Stay aware of the effect of the party’s tone on your dog.
  • Ask kids to play away from your dog.
  • Watch out for stray fireworks.
  • Keep your dog as safe as possible.
  • Keep an eye on your dog
  • Be prepared to leave.

Lost Pets – Chips / GPS Trackers

If you or a friend do lose a pet probably your best bet is the I.D. tag on your pet’s collar and the chip implant from your vet. Although there are several GPS pet trackers on the market now with apps needing your yearly subscription. The GPS, it appears, have the best accuracy and longest range but batteries perhaps are not long lasting. The Tractive GPS Tracker for Dogs and the Tractive GPS Tracker for Cats are picked by The New York Times Wirecutter to be your best investment at this time for accuracy and range to track your pet.

AKC Reunite Lost Pet Program

You can enroll in the AKC Reunite lost pet program. They have helped bring over 725,000 pets back home since 1995. Check out their information!

Find a Lost Pet?

If you run across a lost pet please notify the Oregon Humane Society or your local shelter. If possible, take them to a shelter. In my local area of Portland, Oregon there are several: “Best Animal Shelter Websites“.

Hopefully more people will stop bringing their pets to Independence Day celebrations and others where our pets are truly uncomfortable and better left at home alone. Fewer lost pets equals a happier summer for all.

Do enjoy a fun and very festive fourth of July with your best pet buds safely inside at home!
