A very important topic for discussion is our pets and summer heat! That is why I have reposted the following chart most every year, Cats, dogs, our pet birds, even our fish tank dwellers are affected by summer heat. See the chart from Healthy Pets NW showing heatstroke symptoms for pets left in hot cars. With the summer heat waves we experience here in the Portland, Oregon area and throughout the country, this chart is life-saving for our beloved pets.
Heatstroke Chart

As stated above, IT ONLY TAKES TEN MINUTES FOR THE INTERIOR OF YOUR VEHICLE TO REACH HEATSTROKE STATE IN HOT WEATHER!!
Water Availability
Aside from the danger of leaving a pet in your vehicle in hot weather, remember the importance of having cool water available whether you are traveling or at home. There are inexpensive pet travel bowels available as well as paw protection for hot asphalt at retail pet stores and online. Change your pet’s water on particularly hot days when you are home. That goes for your pet bird as well, and you might even let them try a USA-made “bird bath” dip like the one shown below by Caitec.com of Maryland.

If you take your pet to summer events, like festivals or outdoor markets, please do carry water with you and a utensil for your pet to use. Find collapsible travel water bowls provided by TetonDog.com of Utah.
Walking
You can take the earlier and cooler morning walk times for your pets to avoid the worst for our pets in the summer heat or walk later in the day when the sun is setting. Another good alternative is to use USA-made paw protection like the paw and nose balm offered by SkoutsHonor.com of California or the ‘booties’ named ‘Urban Walkers’ available from HealersPetCare.com of Washington. Another is to stay in the grassy areas of a park or your local dog park.

Fish Tanks
If you have a fish tank, in really hot times I disconnect the tank heater. Normally a small tank, ie, five gallon, will only be 4 degrees cooler than your room temperature. I had Dwarf African frogs who need temps ranging from 72 to 76 degrees. With no air conditioning your room temperature can easily rise to 80 and higher even with fans blowing.
Cooling Off
Aside from plastic pools you can fll with cool water in your yard, many manufacturers have ‘cooling’ beds available for your furry pets in the heat of summer. Check out ‘cooling products’ at your local pet store. Also see online, like the cooling bed insert produced by USA-made Caldera International.com of Oregon.
For more good information take a look at “Fire Danger” about fire emergencies as well as “July 4 Pet Safety Tips & Recommendations“.
If you have an aquarium, see “How to Care for your Small Aquarium in Hot Weather”.
Funny Animal Videos
Compliments of Big Geek Daddy see ‘animals saving people’.
Second to enjoy is ‘this is your internet‘.
And, one more to watch: ‘positive moments with animals’.
