Pet CBD usage — is it good or is it bad for our furry friends?
Pet CBD, although federally legal, has yet to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration. And, they continue to monitor the pet CBD market closely “for illegal and potentially unsafe products”. The FDA also encourages vets and pet parents to report any noted adverse reactions in CBD pet products used. Many players have joined in the CBD market since it started exploding in 2019.
The Good and the Bad Aspects
However, the pet CBD market continues to grow. It has been reported to help in reducing pain, and anxiety in many pets and to aid in alleviating seizures “if your prescribed meds are not doing enough” (Humane Society, 2021 article). The main issues are to check the ingredients closely. CBD or hemp is to contain NO THC, the Marijuana derivative, which will make your pet sick. The second important issue is DOSAGE. Reports state that it is better to start with a low dosage and see the results. Your pet’s age and health are other large considerations to be investigated with your Veterinary professional.
I wrote about pet CBD back in 2021 and 2022. Please take a look at my 2022 post, entitled “Pet CBD Usage Growing?”. It appears that not a whole lot has changed since those posts. Although consumers, retailers, veterinarians, and manufacturers are all becoming more cautious and informed on its usage for pets. According to the AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) the many complications of derivatives in CBD products has made for little regulatory guidance. More research and education is evidenced by the Veterinary Cannabis Society’s continued work in educating the veterinary community.
Hemp CBD vs. Marijuana THC

To differenciate: Hemp leaves are narrower and more elongated. They may appear in a yellowish-green color with curved sub-leaf edges that spread out. Marijuana leaves are broader and more serrated. The plant is usually shorter and bushier, with denser foliage and broader leaves along the stalk.
So it has been shown that CBD or hemp can help our pets to reduce pain, anxiety, and, in some instances, lessen seizures. On the other hand, THC, the hallucinatory ingredient also known as Marijuana, is not a help to our pets and can make them sick. THC is the ingredient to make sure is NOT INCLUDED in your CBD product.

Thank you for the information on CBD Tricia. I’m considering it for my elderly cat, Leonard. As usual the videos were delightful!
