Our pets’ vacation options are actually not at all limited. Following I mention many of those possibilities for our aquarium dwellers, pet birds, cats, and dogs.
Friends

If you have a friend or two available or a trusted friend of a friend to check in on your pet a couple times a day, this is your best option for leaving your pet behind. If they already know your pet, even better. They should take the time to walk, play, feed, and care for your pet. Be sure to let your sitter friend know how your pet needs, as well as how to reach you, and your vet service. This is probably your best option of all for your best pet.
Pet Sitter Services
In home PetSitterPortland.com is a good resource for cat and dog vacations in my local area. Here you can set up the number and length of visits per day, ranging from the hi 20’s to 60 per hour. You can see the sitters available, information on their experience, and set a meet and greet. Just do a Google search for pet sitters near you. Check their references, if they are licensed and bonded. Be sure to check all the fees included.
Dogvacay.com is another possibility for your canine friend. This service is good for pet sitter visits in your home or theirs. In their home is great if your doggo needs quite a bit of interaction. You can check out their sitters online and set up a meet and greet.
A pet sitting service is most likely best for your aquarium critters. They only need to be fed once daily normally and maybe have their tank cleaned up weekly. You can also find automatic feeders for your aquarium. I am just not one to trust something like that not to malfunction. And if it is very cold or very hot weather, it is good to have an actual person check on the tank temperature.
Boarding our Pets
Boarding is available for our pet birds, cats, and dogs. Some places will even rent a roomy cage for a dollar a day and offer grooming services for your birdies. Be sure to check them out and get your questions answered.

In searching for cat boarding services I located a luxurious hotel, kitty condo facilities, and cat and dog boarding with separate areas. Be sure to check out reviews, and see the areas in person to be sure of space adequacy for your best pet.
There are many, many dog boarding facilities. Dogtopia is a good short term and longer stay option. They are throughout the USA, providing plenty of play time, with available grooming services.
Cost wise, boarding appears to range about half of pet sitting, as you might imagine.
Pet Friendly Motels, Hotels, Resorts, and More
Look into weekend getaways and vacation packages at pet friendly establishments. Your can search by state and city. This works great if you want to take your pets with you on a road trip or a weekend to the beach or mountains. Search also for pet friendly vacation rentals. Again, always check out the establishment and ask about pet fees.

One to investigate is Vrbo or Vacation Rental by Owner. Here you can rent someone’s personal home for your vacation.
A great way to travel with our pets and care for them is to rent an RV for a road trip. Go to RVnGo.co or Cruise America.com. Make sure that the vehicle is pet friendly, and note their fees for cleaning, sanitation, damage, etc. If you plan to stay in a RV camp along the way, remember to book your space well in advance.
If you decide to take your pet with you, look at “pet summer product must haves“. You may need a good travel bowl or two, and maybe paw wax or booties for very hot pavement.
If you are flying you will need an approved pet carrier, so check with your airline in advance. Another item recommended is an unwashed t-shirt of your own to place with your pet for comfort in flight.
Whatever your vacation plans may be, enjoy to the fullest!
Funny Animal Videos
First up from Big Geek Daddy, see a kayaking cat.
Next is an elk freed from a porch swing.
And lastly, enjoy why dogs stare.
