That’s right..National Zoo and Aquarium Month – – both are celebrated throughout June. This was proclaimed by Ronald Reagan in 1981 “in honor of the roles zoos and aquariums play in the conservation and research of our animals and fish”.
Zoos
The first zoos were actually begun by the wealthy and were private collections called menageries. National Geographic says that Wall carvings in Egypt show evidence of this practice as early as 2500 BCE. The oldest zoo, as we know them today, was built in 1793 in Paris, France. It is named Menagerie du Jardin des plantes and is still thriving today as a home for giant tortoises. The largest zoo in the USA is the San Diego Zoo in southern California with over 4000 animals and 800 species. Located in Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo was established back in 1916.
Aquariums
The oldest aquarium in the world is Sea Life in Brighton, East Sussex, United Kingdom. Sea Life was built in 1872 and is still operating today with 150 species of marine life in 57 displays. In the USA Belle Isle Aquarium in Detroit, Michigan is our oldest public aquarium. Belle Isle Aquarium was built in 1904. The reviews say it is rather small but with a variety of marine life from around the world. The aquarium is contained in Belle Isle Park with several other exhibits. The largest aquarium in the USA is the Georgia Aquarium in downtown Atlanta. It holds over 10 million gallons of water and is home to more than 1000 marine life and 500 species, including the Whale Shark. The Georgia Aquarium dates to 2005.

American Humane & Conservation
See the large number of zoos and aquariums certified as meeting the highest standards of animal care by American Humane …well over 60 in our the world. Now is the time to visit your local zoo or aquarium. It is also an opportune time to donate to a rescue, a shelter, or any animal conservation and care organization.
Sea Turtle Conservation
Also during June is our World Ocean Day on the Sunday starting the 2nd full week of June, followed by Sea Turtle Week which ends the week on World Sea Turtle Day. Those six days are devoted to Sea Turtle conservation efforts.

Conservation is important not only to benefit our animals and marine life, but to safeguard our planet as well. Remember to recycle and toss trash in an appropriate receptacle. If you are able to donate, this is a great time to help the organizations caring for our natural world.
And do visit your local zoo and aquarium. It is their special time!
