Our National “Change a Pet’s LIfe Day” is celebrated on January 24th annually. I found info on the history and meaning of “Change a Pet’s Life Day” and want to reiterate some of that knowledge following.

History

  • The SPCA or Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals forms in Britain in 1824 – the start of Change a Pet’s LIfe Day.
  • Some time after, in 1866, Henry Berg establishes the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals here in the USA.
  • The Women’s chapter of the Society in Pennsylvania opens the first known animal shelter in 1869.
  • Then, down the road, in 1974, Time Magazine publishes their article “The American Pet” talking about our growing pet ownership population.

And since that time our pet ownership has bloomed far beyond its start. Yes, today we have pet days throughout the year for breeds, species, care, adoption, and many more.

Furthermore, to mention again our enormous growth in pet ownership over the years, Forbes says in their 2023 study that 70 percent of US households own a pet, or 90.5 million homes. And the majority knows exactly why this has occurred.

Meaning

Our animals bring joy and delight into our lives. They are loyal and loving seeing us through hard days and hard times with a lick or a kiss or a purr or just greeting us when we arrive home. They become our babies and best friends and even our protectors alerting us to danger. Some have become heros saving their pet parents lives from fire, intruders, and more.

Some have become champions in police work, disasters, and as therapy animals. But, above all, they are our loving companions.

Ways to Honor and Save Pets Lives

  1. Adopt a rescue animal. See several rescue organizations here: ’Adopt a Pet” and “Pet Events – Animal Welfare“.
  2. Sponsor a rescue animal at your favorite rescue facility. Help pay for their upkeep needs while they are awaiting a pet parent.
  3. Donate to one of the many organizations operating solely for animal welfare.
  4. Enhance your pet’s surroundings. Increase their activity and training.
  5. Provide your best pet bud with good natural food and treats made in the USA. Also get some good toys for alone time like treat puzzles.
  6. Remember their dental health as well as their needed vaccinations and yearly checkups.
  7. Help an endangered species, ie, Sea Turtles.
