With Adopt a Cat Month coming up in June and so many kitty cat questions showing up in Quora, I decided to answer a few here in my post: Kitty Cat Questions Answered.

I am hoping to rescue an older kitty a little later this summer. So I am interested in finding many answers to feline questions myself.

Question 1

Number one – “Why do people feed their pets meat instead of only veggies, fruits, etc? Are humans and pets both considered omnivores by nature?”

Omnivores

In researching information to answer the above, I found the following definition of ‘omnivore’: “Omnivores are living organisms that eat both plants and animals…” The article goes on to mention many types of animals considered omnivores aside from humans, cats, and dogs. You can check out their list here: Omnivorous animals. There appear to be quite a number, including ducks, pigs, chickens, fish, emus, coyotes, ostriches, mice, even cockroaches,,,,yuk!

Carnivores

However, cats are also carnivores, meaning the majority of their diet needs are meat and fish. And they are hunters for prey by nature. Kitties need meat (protein) as the majority of their diet to maintain a healthy heart. Felines do not digest plant material well. See the information from ASPCA here. Meat contains taurine which is provided in meat sources and is essential to maintaining a feline’s healthy heart. As a side note, please see some good and some toxic foods for your kitty cat in my post entitled “Pet Poison Prevention Awareness”. There you will see some safe fruits and veggies to use as treats and some that are detrimental or toxic for your pet cat.

Check out Portland Pet Food.com for some good healthy kitty cat food. Also Dr. Marty.com provides natural healthy cat food. These are both foods grown and produced in the USA.

Question 2

“Can a cat recognize its owner from a distance without smelling them or hearing their voice?”

Cat’s Sense of Smell

According to the Catster editorial team’s research, cat’s sense of smell is 14 times higher than ours and may be useful for them up to a distance of 4 miles. So it is a definite ‘yes’ that they can smell their pet parent from a distance. They do have memory receptors just as we do in remembering your scent or scents.

Cat’s Sight Strength

Kitties are born blind but develop their sight to have the ability to see up to 20 feet clearly. They also have a wider pheripheral vision than humans. We have 180 degrees while your kitty’s pheripheral vision widens to 200 degrees. They also see better than we do in low light as do dogs. They do recognize their pet parent or parents through both smell and sight and hearing your voice over time.

Therefore a cat can certainly recognize its pet parent or caretaker without smelling or hearing them but only through sight for a fairly long distance.

Question 3

“How do I stop my cat sleeping on my bed?”

Cats may want to sleep on your bed and snuggle for warmth, security, and bonding. They like warm spots and will snuggle near your chest and maybe move down toward your feet if you get too warm for them. Some cats prefer to sleep under your bed for a secure ‘cave’ refuge and good place for safely viewing happenings. If you would rather they sleep in their own bed, you will need to shut the door to your room and provide them plenty of warm, comfy spots to sleep in another room. Question 4

“Do cats protect their owner at night?”

I have read recently where a blind rescue cat fought off a pet parent’s attacker in the late night clawing toward the attacker’s face so vigorously that the attacker ran away. Another incident I have heard recently was a cat meowing loudly and continuously to wake up its owner whose residence was filling with gas fumes. Those kitties most likely saved their pet parents’ lives.

Catster has a good article on this subject, saying that while cats seem aloof and independent they rely on their owners or pet parents for food, shelter, and water, and they do develop strong bonds with their caretakers. Since they are much smaller than humans they most likely will not attack but make noise to alert their owners. Or bunch up to appear larger maybe to a threatening dog. Normally they will make noise to alert you of a threat just like the kitties mentioned above that saved their pet parents’ lives.

However, if your kitty gets overly protective and aggressive toward your visitors or friends, you do need to distract them with another activity and perhaps some training.

I hope this answers some good questions about kitty cats for many. Please do take a look at my post entitled “Relaxed Cat = Happy Cat” for great USA-made products to benefit your best kitty bud.
