Coming up soon is our National Pet Day on April 11th annually. A time to spoil our fur buds, feathered friends, and our aquarium critters by showing a bit of extra attention and love. See some fun celebration tips and interesting stats on our pets and this special pet devoted day following.
Reason behind National Pet Day
National Today reports that the National Institutes for Health has been researching the benefits of having a pet on our mental and physical health for the past ten years. The results state, “that not only can pets steal our hearts, but they also contribute to overall cardiovascular health by lowering cortisol, cholesterol, and blood pressure levels”.
This pet holiday was established by an animal welfare advocate in 2006 to highlight the happiness and comfort our pets bring us and to stress the need for pet adoption over pet purchase. Hence the catch phrase: Adopt, don’t shop! See the history leading to this day here.
Reported back in 1973 by the Humane Society of the United States was that approximately 13 million cats and dogs enter shelters every year. While that estimate has gone down mightily with the passage of time and increase in pet ownership, still today the ASPCA estimates about 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters yearly.
Pet adoption has risen with the help of several celebrities advocating the cause like Taylor Swift, Ricky Gervias, Jimmy Fallon, Carrie Underwood and many others. As well pet adoption has taken front seat in many other countries. Japan, Thailand, Latvia, Italy, and Poland all have their own designated national pet days.
How to Celebrate your Pets

There are several great ways to spread additional love and devotion on your pet on National Pet Day. Treats are always a delight. Extra play time, or walks, or training sessions are welcomed. A bit of provided luxury, perhaps a cushy blanket, a new perch, a new toy, or an aquarium swim through log for your particular pet.
But you can also help out as a volunteer at your local shelter or make a donation to help the animals not so lucky to find a forever home. However, probably, the very best way to celebrate this National Pet Day is to adopt a shelter pet.

A feathered friend would love some treats or perhaps a ‘bendy bridge’ toy from Prevue Pet Products.
