Happy New Year! Our year starts with wild and pet birds chirping and welcoming our National Bird Day, celebrated every new January 5th.
The purpose of this day is raising awareness of facing survival and protection issues of both our wild and pet birds. Climate change, habitat loss, and pollution, are largely threatening our bird population. We want to preserve our more than 10,000 bird species, many of which are being threatened with extinction from the problems mentioned. Our avian population does much to enhance our world and to balance our ecosytem in pollinating plants, and controlling pests. Not to mention our delight in watching their beautiful colors, flights, and hearing their songs. Take a look at “Birds in Summer” to see many fun species.

The American Association of Pet Products tells us that pet bird owners have been steadily increasing from 5.7 million in 2022 to 6 million in 2025. The greatest increase is with Gen Z, now representing 22 percent of pet bird owners. And, parakeets, great little companions, make up 28 percent of all pet birds.

Do you enjoy watching birds? Would you like a pet bird? Or do you have a pet bird? Do you feed wild birds? Take a look at the Audubon Society and all the work they do to help our bird population and how you might get involved. You can even sign up to participate in the annual Christmas bird count held December 14 through January 5. Do take advantage of all the education Audubon has to offer on the birds of our world.
If you have never had a pet bird, I can tell you they have great personalities and become very loving. At least my budgies, or parakeets, both became my little buddies. My first was a Christmas gift surprise – Noel, who I had the pleasure of for eight whole years. And many years later, my second girl, Skyli, became another sweet friend. If you would like a pet bird, go to the My Right Bird site for some great info on choosing a bird to fit you and take their quiz. See my post entitled: “A good pet bird for me?”. Another to check out is about bird rescues. And one more gives you some fun bird facts.

Pick up a bird identification book. It will help you learn about species in your area and identify those frequenting your bird feeder.
Enhance the attraction of your backyard or deck. Add feeders, shelter, and more. Learn what birds in your area like to eat and watch them flock to your sanctuary.

Donate to a bird sanctuary or aviary dedicated to improving the survival of endangered birds.
While you are investigating all the fantastic species, visit an aviary. Also, a botanical garden, zoo, or conservation area may offer close-up viewing of some of the more exotic species you have never seen.
If you decide to adopt a pet bird be sure to learn how to care for, feed, and interact with your new feathered friend. Then enjoy all their quirks and delightful company in your new year together!
