Every September 17th is when we celebrate our USA Pet Bird Day! There are so many varieties and colors of our beautiful feathered friends. Some live a very short time and others go on for many years. (It’s good to note that information in relation to your circumstances if you are considering adopting a sweet bird.) See my post on pet birds, entitled “I Want a Pet Bird“, which shows several types of pet birds and the most preferred overall as great family pet birds.

Definitely check our post on Best bird rescues…!

BEAK (the Bird Koalition)

This day is sponsored by Bird Enjoyment and Advantage Koalition, also known as BEAK. This group of bird product manufacturers, retailers, and associations initiated this day in 2019 to celebrate, educate, support, and stress responsible pet bird ownership. They provide information on all kinds of birds and resources for training, care, choosing, bird facts, education, and much more. If you are considering bringing a pet bird into your home, please take a look at their matchmaker quiz to help you find your perfect birdy at My Right Bird.com.

A little Bird History

Birds were kept as pets as far back as 3000 BC by the Sumerians or at least their language gives us a clue by containing a word for ‘birdcage’. And around 1341 AD voyagers to the Canary Islands returned with these little yellow guys and girls in tow where they became the “squawk of the royal courts of Europe”. Then in the 1800s and early 1900s Presidents Andrew Jackson,Ulysses S Grant, William McKinkey, Theodore Roosevelt, and Calvin Coolidge all became parrot pet parents.

Interesting Facts from APPA

The American Pet Products Association notes:

  • There are nearly 6 million American households who own a bird.
  • 14 per cent will even travel with their feathered friend.
  • Millenials are most likely to own a bird at 36%.
  • Baby Boomers are next at 26 percent.
  • Gen Xers follow at 24 percent.
  • When asked why they own a pet bird, 64% said they are fun to watch and have in the house.

My Birdies

I have owned two budgies (parakeets) myself over the years. My first was Noel and she was with me for a great eight years. My last budgie was named Skyli and was with me for a fairly short four years. See my story and experience with these feathered sweethearts in “Best Bird Friends”. They are truly fun companions with cute personalties and can be very loving.

How to Celebrate

Puzzles, bird bathtubs, fun perches, ladders, toys, and interactive games are great ways to engage your bird companion. Try playing ‘fetch’ or ‘hide n’seek’ with your cute buddy. Try placing them on your arm or head and let them explore you. Talk and sing to your bird bud and teach him or her a word or two. See some fun and tasty USA-made and sourced avian products to help celebrate below.
