So many choices. So many animals in need of a forever home. Is pet adoption for you? Dogs are so loving and loyal. Cats are thought to be more independent. Birds?? Aquarium critters? They all have their very individual personalities…even a tiny Dwarf African frog.
I have had all of the above mentioned girls and guys. Just recently I rescued an adorable brown and white tabby cat…short hair was my choice. I found her through Cat’s Meow Cat Rescue of Gladstone, Oregon. That was just three weeks ago and we are bonding well. She is quite independent but also very loving and sweet. I decided to get an adult kitty to cut down on training and one already spayed.

Good Reasons to Rescue an Animal from a Shelter
- They are looking forward to a forever home and you are saving a life. This will free up space for another animal to receive care.
- Ethical shelters provide vaccinations and spay or neuter ops saving you some dollars.
- The shelter people may have good background info on your pet interest.
- If you go through a breeder you will pay many more dollars in adoption fees.
- If you go through a breeder some breeds have particular health issue tendencies.
- If you go through a pet store, you will need to make sure of their reliability and sources.
- You have a wider choice of a new born or older animals to fit your lifestyle.
On the Other Hand
- It might be difficult to find a particular breed through your shelter or rescue group.
- There will be some paperwork involved and you will have to put down a deposit.
- And you may not be a fit with the animal in question and be turned down.
But , all in all, you will fall in love with an animal if looking and you will find your good match.
Consider your Lifestyle
But you do need to consider the type of animal that will fit in with your life. How much time do you want to take for training? So, a puppy, a kitten, a new born or an older animal already with some training?
Will you want an easy pet, like a small aquarium with a minimal time requirement from you? Or a feathered friend in a cage who will need more interaction with you? Or a fur buddy? And then do you want to walk and exercise a fur bud…take them in for regular vet visits…train and feed them. Take a look at my post on questions good to answer in “Pet Adoption Questions”.

If you decide adopting is for you check out your local reputable shelters and rescues for fur buddies and see my post on some good groups here.
If it is a feathered friend you desire, go to the BEAK for help in A Good Pet Bird for Me?
If you have come to the conclusion that an aquarium is what you would like, find a specialty aquarium store near you for your best source, much like The Wet Spot in my local area. And see my aquarium post “Easy Care Pets“.
Our National Adoption Day is coming soon, always the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Are you ready to adopt? If you do, please let us know in our comment section down below on the left.
