Yes, our National Dog Day cometh every year on August 26th. It is time then to check out some great fun ideas for your best canine buddy or buddies. Before we get into all those yummy treats, toys, and more, let’s explore some of the beginnings and designations for this special canine day.
Founder
National Dog Day was founded by Colleen Paige in 2004. She is noted to be a pet and family lifestyle expert and animal rescue advocate as well as a dog trainer and author. Colleen chose this particular day in memory of her family’s first adopted dog, “Sheltie”, when she was just 10 years old.
Mission
USA Dog Day is meant not only to honor our doggy best friends, companions, and service dogs but also to encourage rescues and adoptions from local animal shelters…all mixed breed and pure breed canines. It is also against any type of breed ban. The emphasis is on the need for the great number of dogs to be rescued every year as well as on “the work they do to save lives, keep us safe, and bring comfort”.
Animal Shelters/Rescue Groups
A great way to honor National Dog Day is to rescue or adopt a new doggo or another dog friend or two together. Another good option is to donate to one of many animal shelters, rescue groups, and animal welfare organizations, or help with some volunteer hours at one of your local animal shelters.
