August is the special month to celebrate all canine companions…mutts, mixed breeds, and pure breeds…with our National Dog Day coming up close to the end of that month. So, a great time to encourage rescues and adoptions from local shelters and to get ready to honor all our dogs on their designated celebratory day. See “Our National Dog Day Cometh“.
American Kennel Club – Top 12 Pure Breeds
For the third year in a row, 2025, the French Bulldog remains the most popular pure breed. They are considered very adaptable for smaller spaces, are quite intelligent, easy to train, and are known for their big personalities.

The Frenchie is followed by the Labrador Retriever. These doggos are known as great family dogs…friendly, outgoing, and energetic.

The Golden Retriever is next in line. Also great family dogs with their friendly and gentle dispositions.

Running in order of popularity next are the pure breed German Shepherd, Poodle, Dachshund, Beagle, Rottweiler, Bulldog, German Shorthaired Pointer, Yorkshire Terrier, and the Australian Shepherd.
12 Most Popular Mixed Breeds
Information from Dogster.com tells us that mixed breeds (also known as “mutts”) have become increasingly popular as pets. AKC has even started accepting some mixed breeds into competitions.
Mixed breeds are believed to be healthier genetically. These doggos are a mixture of some of the most popular pure breeds. As a result they have a combination of the two dogs’ temperaments and appearance. They have a range of characteristics making them desirable as pets.
