A few years ago, 2021 to be exact, I wrote about ‘curious facts about cats and dogs’. IE: Why cats crave catnip, dogs strong sense of smell, their body language, the difference in their athletic abilities. It’s time to expand on all the many curious and fun facts of our feline and canine friends.
Little known Cat facts
In a Google search I turned up some interesting data from Good Housekeeping where they share 20 ‘surprising cat facts’. I will mention some of those here since they are somewhat unknown.
Just like we humans and our fingerprints, cats noses have their very individual patterns of bumps and ridges.

Cats do not always land on their feet as we have been told and can be injured from moderate heighth falls.
Kitties have no sweet taste receptors so no cake or ice cream tempts them unlike my tuna sandwich for lunch gotten to first by my Josie girl!
Kitty cats do recognize their names but may not respond depending on their mood…sleepy (no)…playful (yes).

When your cat kneads (also called ‘making biscuits’) it is a signal that they feel safe and are relaxing…yes, my girl does that every night after getting into her bed or on a particular blanket on the sofa.
Your kitty needs an outlet for their instinct to hunt and prey so a toy mouse, treat puzzle, motion toys are good options to keep them engaged.
Peeing outside their litter box is not good and any such change in behavior can signal a medical problem, ie, urinary tract infection.
Daily play time and affection are essential to keep your kitty from boredom and depression even though they are known for their aloofness.

Tail wagging, unlike a dog, normally means irritation by your cat…or give them some space. Yes, I have noticed this in my Josie when she is sleeping and I try to get her to play…she is becoming a ‘sleep hound’ and I do not like it. Time to get her started in Cat School.
One last of Good Housekeeping’s cat mentions:
Beware if you try to rub your kitty’s belly when they are lying on their back. It does not necessarily mean they want you to rub their belly but it does show their trust of you.
Surprising Dog facts
Good Housekeeping also came up with 20 surprising facts about our dogs. So here are ten of their fun stories.
Dogs sweat through their toes. That’s a new one on me. Wow. Also another reason hot pavement is not great for them to walk on.
Our doggos have a muscle above their eyes to help raise them up for that soulful puppy look…they know how to get their treats – LOL!

Canines can be left or right pawed just like us. You can test it when giving a treat or shaking hands to see what paw they put forth first.
A wagging tail doesn’t always mean happiness. You need to pay attention to their whole body language. A fast wagging can mean they are on high alert.
Saying “No” is not helpful but giving them a cue and praising when they get it right works well.
Just like cats, dogs have their own individual nose prints…no two have the same bumps and ridges on their noses. Interesting, huh?!

Family dogs can learn 50 to 100 or more words, ie, for toys, people, activities you include them in.
Your dogs tongue can tell you a few things: if it is red, they may be over-heated or have pent up energy or it could even be evidence of a trauma or infection. If it is wet and pale purple, it may be due to cold and slow moving energy; white coating may be due to digestion issues. That’s quite telling!
Just walking your doggy once in the am and again at night is not enough exercise for most dogs. They need to move freely like a run in a dog park. Good to know!

Studies show that our canines process their daily routines in dreams as we do. So now you know those twitches and ‘woofs’ you noticed and considered are most likely true and probably including you.
There we have more fun and interesting pet facts to share and learn in understanding our fur buddies. Check out the entire list for cats and for dogs to satisfy your interest by following the links provided above.
