Just exactly when is Cat Adoption Month in the USA? We devote the entire month of June to adopting felines. Have you given any thought to rescuing a kitty or an older cat to their forever home? Can you resist that adorable face and their loving purrs? Following see your essential guide to adopting a cat!

AVMA Cat Ownership Facts

The American Veterinary Medical Association in their Pet Ownership and Demographic Sourcebook shows data through 2024 with 32.1 percentage of USA households owning a cat. The rise being most dramatic during Covid and resulting in just over 42 million households owning a cat. This rise has definitely spurred growth in the cat product market. According to Catster Magazine’s, current to 2025 data, shelter cat adoption has risen by 14 percent since 2019.

Rescue Sources

Pet Finder is a good starting point to locate a new best feline friend. You can find pets available for adoption near you and list your preferences for your desired rescue on their site.

You can also find good long established rescue organizations like the Humane Society of the United States, Best Friends Animal Society headquartered in Utah, and ASPCA since 1866. If you are local to my area the Oregon Humane Society near Troutdale, Oregon is the largest rescue in the Northwest and the oldest in the United States. Three others for felines locally are Cat Adoption Team in Sherwood, Oregon, The Pixie Project in Portland, Oregon, and Cat’s Meow Cat Rescue in Gladstone, Oregon. See my post “Best Animal Shelter Websites” for a bit more in-depth info on most of these shelter groups. Cat’s Meow Cat Rescue was referred to me by a friend and where I ended up rescuing my feline girl, Josie.

Preparation

In readiness for finding your kitty cat, read all that you can about kitties, their behavior, their tricks, their medical traits, and much more. For example, I have plants in my home which I needed to check on for any possible toxic properties they might have for a feline. Another important topic is the best food to use after introducing it to them from whatever they may be use to. You will obviously need a good food and a water bowl. Then it is time to start gathering supplies, like a nice scratching post, a couple fun toys, a litter box with a mat and scoop, maybe even a window seat.

Before adopting take a look at my post “Pet Adoption Questions“. It has important questions you need to answer for yourself before taking that adoption step.

Resources

Great resources I have found include Tufts Catnip.com for vet information and more through Cummings Veterinary School at Tufts University. They have a monthly newsletter all about cats.

At Maddie’s Fund you can take a class online and learn how to train your kitty cat. You can also find good care and feeding info.

Catster is a good publication to browse through as well as Pet Age and their Cat Guide.

Remember to check with your vet and have your fur bud micro-chipped in case of loss. An ID tag for their collar with your name and phone number is another good safeguard.

Training

Some good potty training advice, if you have a young kitten, is given by Dr. Elsey’s Marketing Director, Gina Zaro, following. In order to connect the litter box with their need to potty, she explains, you would need to put the kitten in the litter box right after eating as they usually have the natural reflex action to potty at that time. Also, she mentions, it is a great idea to make sure the box is low enough for your kitty otherwise give them a step to ensure they can easily get into the box.

The more often you do the above action, the sooner your kitty will be automatically using your litter box.

Wishing you a very loving companionship with your new feline fur friend!
