Not long after our National Pet Day on April 11th comes International Turtle and Tortoise Week with ZooMed Labs April 2lst through the 25th when they share educational material and workshops available to our school kids on caring for these incredible endangered creatures. Following on the 26th is Earth Day when we pitch in and clean up our neighborhoods. Our special day of effort to help care for our planet. So how did all this directed care come about specifically during April?
Our Pets

Recently I wrote about our National Pet Day and its origin by an animal advocate stressing the need for pet adoption. It is believed April was chosen as the start of Spring and new beginnings associate with the happiness pets bring into our lives.
Earth Day

Earth Day was designated in April in 1970 as the start of our environmental movement to raise awareness to care for our planet and save us from industrial, chemical, and waste pollution. See “Join Us in Making a Difference this Earth Day”.
Zoo Med Labs
It is reported that ZooMed Labs Turtle and Tortoise week likely was “timed to coincide with Earth Day and the spring season, which is when many reptiles become more active and visible”. Zoo Med was established over the past 47 years by their founder Gary Bagnall. He grew up in northern California and delighted in nature. Mr. Bagnall loved watching the creatures develop in nearby creeks and studying their busy habitats.
That fascination led him to working in pet and fish shops as a young man. His interest grew in trading reptiles worldwide and led him to the vision of his lifelong passion: “… Zoo Med Laboratories, the pinnacle in innovative pet care for reptiles and exotic pets for pet owners and conservationists worldwide”.

Today “Zoo Med currently has over 30 patents and manufactures over 50% of its 1200 item product line at company headquarters in San Luis Obispo, California. Zoo Med supports many conservation organizations and regularly donates to over 100+ aquarium, reptile, and avian societies.”
Take some time this April to walk and take in the wonder of nature and participate in helping save our planet and all the wonderful creatures trying to survive in it. Get back to us with any memorable happenings you experience in April. Just leave us your comments down below on the left or on our Contact page in the top menu.
