Is it important to take care of your pet’s dental health? You bet it is! The majority of dogs and cats have periodontal disease by just 3 years of age. Without taking preventative measures, periodontal disease will worsen over time and can cause a multitude of problems and even death in the long run. See signs of dental problems from the American Veterinary Medical Assocation below.
Dental Problems to Check
- Bad breath
- Broken or loose teeth
- Extra teeth or retained baby teeth
- Teeth that are discolored or covered in tartar
- Abnormal chewing, drooling, or dropping food from the mouth
- Reduced appetite or refusal to eat
- Pain in or around the mouth
- Bleeding from the mouth
- Swelling in the areas surrounding the mouth
Preventative Actions
Starting at an early age you can introduce your kitty or puppy to you brushing their teeth with pet products specifically for that purpose. There are a number of good USA-made products on the market today to help in that regard. And, of course, having them checked out at your vet yearly is a must. Dental cleaning is available on many Wellness insurance policies.
If your pet is a bit older start slowly by introducing them to the process with a pet wipe.

USA-made Pet Dental Products
Jax and Cali of Florida – offers Natural toothbrush wipes to clean your pet’s teeth and keep their breath smelling fresh. The wipe fits over two fingers to easily keep teeth wiped clean

To date I have only tried Zymox’s Oratene and it appears to be doing well for my kitty. Use the one that feels best for you. I may also try one of the finger wipes for my girl who is already just over two years. Let me know what works for your pet friends so I can share with other pet parents.
