It might be easy to forget to honor our K9 Veterans, our military and working dogs. But we are thankfully reminded, at least, to do so every March 13th. These professionally trained canines assist us in so many ways. Not only do they help our soldiers in time of war but also our disaster and emergency personnel in saving lives, locating those who have fallen, finding dangerous explosives, and lethal drugs.

K9 Tasks

It is interesting to note that military dogs are always given a higher rank than their handler…that of NCO. Below is a list of their many tasks:

  • Scouting
  • Bomb detection
  • Sentries
  • Couriers
  • Locating wounded men
  • Sniffing out poison gas
  • Alerting soldiers of enemy presence
  • Delivering life-saving medicine

American Humane Society Advocacy

The American Humane Society says…”Military working dogs are the soldiers you didn’t know you should salute. Since the United States military officially recognized “war dogs” in 1942, over 30,000 pups have served under the U.S. alone”. See my post on K9 Dogs History here.

What is gratifying is to see that many of the dogs are reunited with their handlers when the dogs are retired. “For years, military working dogs were classified as “equipment,” often left overseas or disposed of after their service. But thanks to American Humane Society’s advocacy, Congress now requires that these loyal canine heroes be brought back to U.S. soil upon retirement, with their handlers and families given the first opportunity to adopt them.”

The handlers are responsible for any transportation costs involved in bringing their canine home so the American Humane Society encourages donations to aid that process. What a great way to honor our K9 vets!

So should you come upon a military dog don’t hesitate to salute that canine!

Check out my earlier post on K9 Vets and their history going back as far as 600 BC here. In that post you will also find more donation sites for honoring our K9 Veterans. Also take a look at “The Importance of Service Dogs…”.
