Recently I spent some time in New Hampshire on a beautiful lake where my brother lives. It had been nine years since seeing him and his children and their children…and over 20 years since experiencing all the fun of Mirror Lake wildlife…its seasonal delights, and local fauna.

Winter

In winter the lake freezes solid but is still a flurry of activity with people walking across it, even cars skidding through. Trucks have been known to be lost after trying to cross this frozen space. Fishing holes appear in the ice with hardy fishermen standing by holding their poles in gloved hands.

Spring

In early Spring you will most likely encounter a large bear staring in your window looking for food or raiding your bird feeder. I know this to be true as it has happened at my brother’s abode more than once. The birds are diving for a bite of fish and smaller animals are beginning to appear.

Summer

There were 14 of us at this get together, ages 16 on up to 89, and two I had never met in person. It was a great time in the lake on a kayak or canoe, many swimming to the dock, lounging or just keeping cool in the water, with a few reading on the deck. We had one fisherman and he was successful in catching a couple of largemouth bass.

Loons and Kingfishers

The Loon was rumored to have a baby. We only saw him or her from a distance this trip. They have a very distinctive and beautiful sound. They either yodel to announce their presence or make a sound called a ‘tremolo’…haunting and eerie. Or the loon will give a short ‘hoot’ to share their location with another. Our Loon was present most every day from afar.

The colorful Kingfishers were amazing with their sharp beaks and diving speed in their quest for a meal or a snack.

Deer

Driving into the small resort town for supplies and browsing the diverse shops for touristy items, we spied a mother Deer and her fawn patiently waiting to cross the road. At first I actually thought they were statues…LOL!

Along with being treated to delicious seafood fare and my nieces’ luscious home cooked dishes, we attended a Concert in the Park, with a lakeside gazebo and lake backdrop. Along with many docked boaters, we enjoyed a Beatles soundalike group…they were fantastic.

Wild baby Mink

What a treat and surprise to see a small baby Mink running around the property. Poor thing was probably looking desperately for its mother and siblings.

Mama Turkey and babies

Shortly before retiring from the deck and starting a new card game, we spied a mother Turkey and five small babies on the lake house path. She was keeping a close eye on her little ones.

Seaplane Landing

One afternoon we heard a strong engine noise and glancing up saw a seaplane approaching the lake. The boats, kayaks, and canoes immediately cast a wide berth to give the plane room to land. My niece explained that the pilot is a lake resident.

Dock Securing and Resident Mice

With all the help available my brother decided it was time to haul in the dock and secure it for the season. Lo and behold two mice were found residing under the winch cover.

Sunset

My lake time was drawing too soon to an end. We saw some beautiful sunsets mirrored in the lake along with all the hills and forest area.

The wildlife is fun to see and interesting to watch but seeing my brother and his daughters and son and daughter and sons-in-law after quite some years was a treasure. And re-meeting or just first meeting my great-nieces and great-nephews and seeing how they are maturing into young adults was a prize.

Next in line is a bear stealing candy bars.

Last we have a mama Moose.
