Pet Holiday Anxiety Issues?

Kitten peeking 400 x 400

A note about Sea Turtles before going to our question: Pet Holiday Anxiety Issues?

Sea Turtle News

Save Animals Facing Extinction.org recently reported that our conservation efforts for Sea Turtles in North Carolina are proving very worthwhile with 459 recorded nests just this season. This means busier than usual nesting seasons. Since my niece and her husband, who live on the beach in North Carolina, volunteer there specifically with saving Sea Turtles, this makes me particularly proud. And, the report goes on to say that we need to keep up our work with sea turtles since only one in one thousand hatchlings ever make it to adulthood. See more details on their site linked above. Also take a look at my post entitled “World Turtle Day”.

Holiday Pet Anxiety?

Does your pet have issues with visitors, known or strangers, or loud traffic noises, stormy weather? Do they hide – or show aggression – or shake and shiver – or try to make themselves smaller? Does your fur bud or feathered friend exhibit strange behavior when people come to see you or if they are with you outside their home?

With holidays looming and planning get togethers, the time is here to help your pet buddies loosen up a bit. There are quite a good number of remedies on the market for our pets with anxiety now. I have written about this subject more than once. Do take a look at another post entitled “Pet Anxiety Symptoms and Aids“.

Anxiety Vests

Here is a simple solution for many pets to feel more confident and cared for. See my post story “Does your Pet Suffer from Anxiety?“.

Healers Pet Care Front Body Wrap AnxietyVest 300x 300

The anxiety vest pictured above is from Healers Pet Care, Vancouver, WA, a great lightweight, breathable, help for your pet baby and all USA-made and sourced. This wrap is also easy on and off and washable. And, if you read my story above, you know how well these vests work to give your pet friend the ‘hug’ they need to feel more self-assured.

CBD Oil, Soft Chews, Treats

You can see my post on CBD from 2022,” “Pet CBD Usage Growing?“.

Updates since 2022

Checking back with The Humane Society regarding the use of CBD for our pets, they reiterate that the Hemp and CBD products are safe and do help to reduce pain for our animals. Specifically, they note these products can be effective in “reducing pain, anxiety, gastrointestinal issues, and seizures in cats and dogs”. They do caution, however, to check with your vet for using hemp or cbd products for your pet. In fact it is best to check with your vet for the best dosage amount for your pet based on their weight, age, and medical history. And do remember to be sure the product is THC-free or no Marijuana ingredient.

The Veterinary Cannibis Society, who provides education on cannibis usage reports on an article from the FDA.gov in January 2023 indicating “they are considering working with Congress on potential regulatory pathways for CBD products”.

Additional USA-made and Grown CBD Companies

CBD Product Suzies CBD Drops 300 x 264
Prospect Farms

I found no new CBD reports on Pet Product News but did on Pet Age about Brooke Shields joining Prospect Farms of Prospect, Maine as their premier marketing person and a board member for their USDA certified organic cbd products for our pets. All is grown and produced from their 400 year old farm in Maine. This company provides calming and mobility drops for both cats and for dogs.

Fab CBD / Nuleaf Naturals

Forbes does show a newer article reporting on ‘the best dog cbd for 2022’. Of those mentioned FabCBD.com of MIlwaukee, Wisconsin provides a THC-free organically grown in Colorado pet hemp oil. And, a second USA CBD player reported is Nuleaf Naturals.com of Denver, Colorado. Nuleaf gives us USA organic hemp products for pets in the form of oil and chews.

Kadenwood / Suzie’s Pet Treats / Charlotte’s Web

Of the three mentioned in my previous post by Discover and Pet Product News, Kadenwood of Newport Beach, California is still going strong in the pet cbd market.

Also Suzie’s Pet Treats.com of Colorado is still listed with USDA certified organic cat cbd bits, dog drops, and dog treats. Their ingredients are all listed on their site.

Last I will mention again is Charlotte’s Web of Colorado. They offer hemp calming chews and oil for dogs in two dosage sizes.

There are quite a large number of companies in this pet cbd market. The only ones I have mentioned or will mention are all USA-made. Not to say there are not more available to you, but these are the ones I have investigated todate.

Other Anxiety Products

For separation anxiety, treat dispensers like those from SodaPup.com and treat puzzles from Catamazing.com and PlanetDog.com are excellent all USA-made ideas for your fur buds. They even have a similar idea for your feathered friends by HootnHollerBirdToys.com of Alabama – a treat table. Any good attention grabbing toy is good to keep your pet friends occupied while you are out.

I hope the above information gives you some good prospects to help your pet with any anxiety issues they may have.

Pet Days Coming = Mutt & Fish

Mutt pic 350 x 234

National pet days coming soon equal Mutt and Fish. National Mutt Day is just around the corner and celebrated on December 2nd here in the USA.

‘Mutt’ Defined

What exactly is the definition of a ‘mutt’? Webster’s defines ‘mutt’ as a mongrel or a mixed breed canine while Thesaurus gives us the synonym “a scruffy pooch”. Probably most of us do have ‘mutts’ or mixed breed dogs but that does not mean they are ‘scruffy’ by any means. If you have rescued your pet pooch they probably are a mutt and also very adorable, loyal, and loving. They just are not eligible to be entered in the original American Kennel Club Registry for pure breeds. However, they can be enrolled in the AKC Canine Partners Program and take advantage of all kinds of sports and agility activities.

Facts about Mutts

Here are six known facts about “mutts” from PetDesk.com:

  • They can be healthier than purebreds. …
  • They come in all shapes and sizes. …
  • They have unique personalities. …
  • They make great family pets. …
  • They can be easier to train. …
  • Adopting a mutt is a great way to help reduce pet overpopulation.

There you have great reasons to rescue a Mutt! They can be healthier than purebreds because “they have a wider gene pool giving them a better chance of not inheriting certain health issues”…Yea! Maybe less vet dollars! Not to mention that their mixed parentage often gives them a combination of desirable traits so they may be easier to train according to PetDesk facts.

It sounds like you need to pat yourself on the back if you have rescued a ‘mutt’ or are about to do so. Cheers to you!

Our USA National Fish Day is designated as a celebatory December 18th.

Aquarium Critters

Do you have a beta fish or a gourami or another or several in a fish tank? I have had many betas in the past as well Dwarf African frogs, and Nerite snails in a small aquarium. They are all very fun to watch and even interact with.

Aquarium Cleaning Remedies

I found the betas hardest to keep healthy, but that was before I found a good fish specialist in a PetSmart store. She informed me on the best way to keep nasty critters out of my fish tank. To do that, she informed me, is to rinse all utensils with very hot water and even lemon before cleaning and after cleaning. Later I found an additional good remedy from a Petco employee. Catappa leaves or Indian Almond leaves are the second helper. You simply float the leaves in the aquarium to assist in stopping any bad bacteria from forming.

Aquarium Catappa Leaves 300 x 300

Unfortunately, there is no perfect answer but the above remedies do quite a good job. See my post “Easy Pets” for information on several fun aquarium species.

Little Known Aquarium Creature Facts

Here is a summarized rendition of little known aquarium creature facts from SeaTechAquariums.com.

  1. Goldfish have teeth at the back of their throats which they use to grind their food.
  2. Some fish can associate sounds with feeding time.
  3. Some fish play dead by floating at the top of their tank to protect themselves.
  4. Fish were here prior to the dinosaurs.
  5. There are some 30,000 species of fish.
  6. The world’s smallest fish is less than a third of an inch and is translucent and a member of the carp family.
  7. We know fish feel pain and can protect themselves; if they have real emotion like happiness we do not know.
  8. A clown fish only weighs about 9 ounces.
  9. Fish have taste buds on their tongue, lips, and body.
  10. Neon Tetra males tend to be slim and the females plump.
  11. They say that male Siamese fighting fish or Betas were bred for aggression before the 19th century.

USA Senior Pet Month = November

Dog Senior red and white 450x450

With USA Senior Pet Month celebrated in November each year I want to show some sites with handsome, adorable senior cats and dogs available just for you, should you be looking. What could be better than a dog or cat already trained and ready to be your best friend? If you are older yourself, what a great complement for your lifestyle.

And not only is November our Senior Pet Month but later in the month, the 20th to be exact, is designated as our National Adoption Day. Adopt a new senior pet! What a great way to celebrate Thanksgiving!

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

I have mentioned Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in previous posts, the no-kill sanctuary in Utah. Looking through their site at this writing, they show 53 very distinguished looking senior cats of all colors, both short hair and long hair, including a couple of Siamese and a Manx up for adoption. They range in age from 10 years to 20. A couple of their sweet kitty cats are shown below.

Best Friends long hair Manx 200x200
Best Friends Domestic short hair 200x200

For senior dogs they show 75 guys and girls ranging in age from 7 years to 15. These handsome doggos are of many different breeds including Bull Dog, Catahoula, Border Collie, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Chihuahua, Chow Chow, Labrador, Boxer, Shepherd, Hound, Cattle Dog, and more. A couple of their very cute canines are shown below.

Best Friends Shepherd mix 200x200
BestFriends Hound Pointer mix 200x200

Best Friends also has several other types of animals like bunnies and horses. Take a look at their site linked above.

Cat Adoption Team

Specifically for cats, the Cat Adopton Team is a local group to me located in Sherwood, Oregon. At the present they only show one senior up for adoption and she looks like quite a doll, Andi. They have quite a number of young cats and kittens. Here is Andi >>

Cat Adoption Team Senior Andi 11 200x148

Oregon Dog Rescue

Tualatin’s Oregon Dog Rescue has just one senior dog available at this writing. And her name is Annie, adorable, and 10 years old. As with the smaller rescue for cats, Cat Adoption Team, they appear to have a much larger number of younger doggies. See a special Annie here:

OR Dog Rescue Annie 10 Senior Lab

Oregon Humane Society

The Oregon Humane Society, like Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, rescues both cat and dogs plus smaller animals and farm animals. In our search for senior cats and dogs we only find one senior dog today, but a total cutie. They show 10 year old terrier/chihuahua mix, Lemmiwinks. See how cute he is for yourself>>

OR Humane Soc Senior 10 terrier/chihuahua mix Lemmiwinks

The Pixie Project

The Pixie Project of Portland, Oregon rescues both cats and dogs. They show one senior red kitty named Connor who has an adoption pending. They also have a number of courtesy photos for adoptions through individuals. Probably best to call this group direct for any more information on seniors.

The Pet Finder

Other than rescue groups known to you, The Pet Finder app gives you the option of finding the best information for your local area for pets.

Additional Info

If you should decide to adopt a senior pet, take a look at my post “Pet Adoption Questions” for some good reminders.

And do check out my past post “November is USA Senior Pet Month” for some USA-made product info to benefit your senior best pet friend.

One more post to consider for additional rescue resources is “Pet Events – Animal Welfare“.

Happy Cat = Relaxed Cat

Cat toy felt ball 406x406 best POST Adopt a PET 23

Since National Cat Day is celebrated October 29th here in the USA, I want to write another post celebrating our great feline friends. And, yes, a happy cat equals a relaxed cat. You can see many ways to help instill a happy demeanor in your furry bud described in my post “All About Cats“. Please also check out “October 29th…Meow!”

Interaction

Interacting with your fur baby using play time, and short bursts of training, or just relaxing and petting your kitty, makes for a happy cat. Have you considered training you fur bud to walk with you or to do a trick or two? Are you into kayaking? How about your kitty joining you? If your cat likes car trips, be sure to make their carrier a comfy, cozy hideaway.

Kitty in water vest sitting on Kayak bow 250 x 187

Both LupinePet.com of New Hampshire and UpCountryInc.com of Rhode Island offer USA-made handmade collars, leashes, and harnesses for cats with tons of choices available.

VanNessPets.com of New Jersey is a good option for a great USA-made carrier, and they also make food and water bowls and more for your furry friend.

Activity

Providing objects to keep your kitty from total boredom is a must. Scratchers are not only good to keep your furniture in good shape. Treat puzzles are another fun alone-time activity. An empty box or two or three is great too. And, if you have the space, a Catico, I am sure, would be heavenly. If not, a window lounge is a fun option. Of course, toys that they can bat about are a definite do.

Cat treat maze Catamazing 410x410 best POST Cat Adopt Mo 23

Very handsome and fun scratchers are made by Imperial Cat.com of Arkansas. and Catamazing.com in New Jersey supplies their USA-made treat puzzles and feeders.

Toys for your feline fur bud abound from DrPussums of Maine for teasers, DuckyWorld.com of Minnesota for catnip toys, and Amerikat.com of Pennsylvania for felt balls.

If you would like a window perch or lounge to spoil your kitty, try KHPet.com of Colorado or PrimeTimePetz.com of Texas.

Health Necessities

Good natural USA-made cat food, treats, and fresh water are high on the agenda, including dental treats. Vet check-ups as well as good preventative supplements and a natural litter for their clean litter box are all the best for your kitty’s good health.

Portland Pet Food.com of Oregon gives us lip-smacking human grade cat food and treats. And Pet Honesty.com of Texas offers natural calming chews if your kitty is anxious. PrimeTimePetz, aside from their perches and beds, has single ingredient yummy cat treats.

SkoutsHonor.com of California presents USA-made grooming and probiotic supplements for our feline babies. Not to forget, HealersPetCare.com of Washington with their topical treatments and supplements.

Dental help, all USA, is yours through Oxyfresh.com of Idaho and TrueBluePets.com of California in the shape of pet dental gel, a water additive, and dental wipes.

Dental cat 310 x 89 best welcome

Playmate

Adopting a playmate might just be a fantastic idea. Adoption would certainly be the very best way to celebrate National Cat Day! And your feline friend might just be over the moon if you do so. See my post on “Adopt a Pet” for good rescue site information. Specifically for cats in my local area of Portland, Oregon are the Pixie Project and the Cat Adoption Team.

Whatever you do, enjoy National Cat Day to the umpteenth degree with your best kitty buddy. If you adopt or did so during June, our Cat Adoption Month in the USA, cheers and yahoo for you!

Halloween Facts & Beliefs

5 Halloween dressed cats and dogs 612 x 330
Row of dogs and cats dressed in Halloween costumes together on white background

The Pioneer Woman” publication gives us quite a number of little known and long heard of Halloween facts and beliefs. Some of these I am going to share below adding my own comments as well. This season is always a fun time of celebration here in the USA.

They say that 46 percent of Americans plan to make or carve jack-o’-lanterns in 2023…up by 2 percent from 2022. That is 154 million Americans making jack-o’-lanterns! Wow, quite a number of us have fun doing this. I usually draw mine; not much into carving – LOL.

Transylvania is a real place in Romania. I believe most of us have known this fact for quite some time.

This is a new Halloween fact for me: there is a statue of Jason Voorhees from “Friday the 13th” at the bottom of a lake in Minnesota, there since 2013. It has become a popular underwater diver attraction.

Greenwich Village in New York has the largest Halloween parade with thousands of costumed attendees on Halloween. I have never been to a Halloween parade. That sounds like a ton of fun.

It is believed Ireland was the birthplace of Halloween. Even today they celebrate with street parties, lighting bonfires, and setting off fireworks aside from trick or treating and dressing in scary Halloween costumes. I used to hand out candy for my sis on Halloween and both of us would dress with a new fun mask every year to greet the trick or treaters. At present I still decorate my entry door and deck, and interior if time allows. How about you?

Halloween dates back to the 1800’s with the Celts who believed the dead returned to earth that night. That is why, it is believed, they lit bonfires and wore costumes “to ward off the ghosts”.

Halloween dead image 300x174

Here’s an interesting Halloween fact on how much we Ameicans spend, on the average, on Halloween every year. According to the National Retail Federation we spend just over $100 on this date. They conduct an annual survey on Halloween expenditures in the USA. I am surprised at, what seems to me, to be a pretty low figure. Evidently, not as many people are as involved in Halloween as I expected. Considering costumes, decorations, candy for treats, and parties, it appears to be a fairly low amount. How do you compare?

Irish immigrants brought the Halloween tradition with them to the US in the mid 1800’s. This is when there was a potato famine in Ireland. And, originally they carved turnips rather than pumpkins.

In the USA we started our trick or treat candy tradition in the 1950’s when the candy makers started promoting their goods through the retail trade.

New Hampshire holds the Guiness World Record for most lit jack-o’-lanterns – just under 30,600. This is in the City of Keene. They have held the title for at least eight years. I wonder what their population numbers? According to the U.S. Census, their total population was just under 23,000 in 2022. That is one huge number of lit pumpkins for that small town. Do you think they may have quite of number of people with Irish ancestry who live there?

Halloween and jack o lanterns 300x225

Another note on our Halloween facts and beliefs, is on scarecrows, a Halloween agricultural symbol. Scarecrows were originated by Greek farmers to protect their crops, mainly from crows.

And finally, another new Halloween fact in my book is that pumpkin is actually considered a fruit, as it originates from a flower. This is the first mention of pumpkin as a fruit that I can ever recall.

For more Halloween lore see my recent post “All About Cats”.

Pet Food Recalls

I have seen mention of recent recalls. Be sure to check with our FDA.gov site for pet food recall info often to safeguard your pets.

All About Cats

Kittens 445 x 247

To begin “All About Cats” I will talk about the many cat breeds and go on to their Halloween connection followed with common burn causes, how to help our feline friends stay happy, and where to go for your best kitty products.

Cat Breeds

As of 2023 Cat Fanciers Association has a count of 45 standardized cat breeds while International Cat Association’s total extends to 73 types of felines. The wide variation they say is relegated to the non-pedigreed not being included in a registry but only the pedigreed breeds being considered.

Wikipedia has a great list of cat breeds with good identifying pictures included. They actually show about 100 different types of kitties starting with the Abyssinian, which possibly originated in Ethiopia. That is the kitty I would like to have with me. Their list ends with the York Chocolate, originating in the US, New York. This is a cat associated with Halloween.

Cat breed Abyssinian Ethiopa 210 x 300

The Abyssinian is a short haired guy or girl, red in color.

Cat breed York Chocolate NY USA 200X300

The York Chocolate is pictured above…that particular look is kind of Halloween scary – LOL!

Let’s just stick to the top 15 most famous breeds and their popularity among adults. The YouGov rating site gives us those most famous breeds listed in order below with their fame percentages ranging at 87% at number 1 down to 67 percent at number 15. The popularity percentiles start at 58% and head down to 41 percent in order.

  1. Siberian
  2. Himalayan
  3. Bengal
  4. American Shorthair
  5. American Bobtail
  6. British Shorthair
  7. Maine Coon
  8. European Shorthair
  9. Abyssinian
  10. Savannah
  11. Desert Lynx
  12. American Wirehair
  13. Russian Blue
  14. Egyptian Mau
  15. Ragdoll

The YouGov site shows pics of each mentioned and more; if you want to take a look, hit the link above. I am surprised to see no Siamese mentioned. Where does your fur bud sit in the list?

A Little Halloween History Horror Story

Halloween Monster cookies 300x300
Photo by Daisy Anderson on Pexels.com

With Halloween creeping up, along with our famous ‘black cat’ superstitions, it is interesting to note how all the super nonsense began. A black cat has been associated with bad luck, evil, and witches in many countries since medieval times but in other countries like Scotland and Japan they are seen as a symbol of affluence and good luck…go figure.

As the story goes, and as it is told on history.com, all the way back in Greek mythology cats were associated with the moon and witchcraft. In 1233 Pope Gregory IX issued a church document which declared black cats as an ‘incarnation of Satan’. This was the start of the Inquisition and witch hunts in medieval times when it was believed witches could turn themselves into cats.

Halloween witch and black cat 85 x 300

It is suggested that the witches with their cats were getting too much influence with their dislike of authority and giving the church a run for its money, so to speak. They were making the church ‘authority’ uneasy. The black cat became the main influence with witches supposedly because they are harder to see at night, helping the cats to be better hunters. It was reported that cats were accused of causing the Black Plague and many were killed as a result. The irony was that they controlled the rodent population that actually spread the disease.

When the Puritan colonists came to America they arrived bringing with them the evil black cat, bad luck superstition lore with them – still with us in some respects today.

Turning Bad Luck to Good for our Cats

Tufts Catnip newsletter of Tufts University, one of the top vet colleges in the world, gives some great advice on care tips for cats in keeping your cat safe from burns. They comment on three major burn categories and how to treat them. Their info is summarized below.

Thermal Burns

Thermal burns are the most common. These result from contact with flames, steam, hot liquids, heating pads, hair dryers, heat lamps, plus. This household accident is one such as scalding from a hot liquid or flying grease.

This type of burn they advise to NOT APPlY COLD WATER OR ICE OR BUTTER OR ANY TYPE OF OINTMENT. They also recommend TO NOT BANDAGE OR TRY TO CLEAN THE WOUND, but to BRING YOUR CAT TO THE VET IMMEDIATELY. It can be worse than it looks and needs professional care.

Chemical Burns

Second are chemical burns and the second most common burns for house cats. This is when your cat’s skin comes in contact with any caustic substance like turpentine, or a toxic cleaning substance. If your cat tries to sooth her skin with her tongue it can cause more burns inside her mouth. In this case Tufts advises putting your kitty in a towel or blanket and carrier. Then you need to proceed to your closest vet hospital for treatment.

Electrical Burns

Third most common are electrical burns from biting through an electrical cord or a poorly insulated appliance. This affects the tongue and top of your cat’s mouth. And in this case as in chemical burns, they stress the importance of wrapping your kitty in a towel or blanket and heading to the nearest vet hospital for professional eyes and treatment.

Great Tips for a Contented Cat

Tufts Catnip gives us a list of ways to keep our feline babies happy and content…16, in short form, to be exact.

Kitty sleeping close up Pexels 270 x 180 best welcome
  1. Cats, as you know, are quite independent creatures. In this regard they say to let your cat come to you for ‘short bouts of petting’. In other words, let her nudge you if she wants more.
  2. Your cat does want to interact with you so be sure to take time for some play sessions with toys and training too.
  3. They advise using an unscented litter that is soft and dust-free to safeguard your cat’s respiratory system.
  4. Always keep food and water bowls separate, and not in the same space. Change their water often.
  5. Play soothing music to relax your kitty. As an aside, I even leave music on for my Nerite snail, and did also for my Dwarf African frogs and Betta fish.
  6. Groom your fur buddy regularly. Brushing helps to keep fur clean and gives you the opportunity to check for any unknown wounds or lumps.
  7. Make your kitty’s carrier a comfy oasis so that they are happy to use it when needed. And if you leave it available with a nice blanket and a toy or two, your kitty will probably use it as a lounging area.
  8. Learn how to speak “Cat”. Tufts says that cats blink languidly at us when they are comfortable and relaxed. Try blinking slowly back at them and see if they approach you or give you a ‘nudge’.
  9. Do not force a pill on them. Try putting it in wet food or an edible pill pocket. Or you might see about having it made into a liquid form and adding a fish flavor to it.
  10. Training with positive reinforcement like a yummy treat is a great way to get them to scratch on a post instead of your furniture, or to stop meowing, or to teach them to sit. Be sure to give your love bug the treat right after doing what you asked.
  11. If you want to go all out and have the space, install a catwalk. Install brackets along a wall in your bedroom or family room, den. It needs to be 6 to 12 inches wide and 2 feet below the ceiling. Use perches for your cat’s access. Your fur bud will be in heaven! Another thought in this area would be a deck catico if you have an available area.
  12. Be sure to read your cat food labels for good nutrition. See my post on reading pet food labels: “Understanding Pet Food Labels”.
  13. Since our cats like much warmer temperatures than we do, set their bed near a fireplace or heat vent so they can get nice and cozy.
  14. Don’t let a high price for your pet’s food trick you into thinking it is a better food. As mentioned in number 12 check the labels for AAFCO’s label, the American Association of Feed Control Officials. Or check out my USA-made and all natural choices for both food and treats.
  15. Treats are good in moderation. As an example, no more than 25 calories a day for a 12 pound cat that needs an average 250 calories each day. Tufts mentions that 25 calories would come to a little less than a quarter can of tuna packed in water. To see a list of inexpensive, natural treats take a look at “Time for Thanks with Natural Pet Food Treats“.
  16. Tufts lists ASPCA’s (Animal Poison Control Center) toll-free number as 888-426-4435. They have 40 vet pros available day and night. Note that there is a consultation fee charged.

Pet Safety Defined

Safety Symbol 311x402

October is defined as Pet Safety and Protection Month, including Pet Wellness; hence the following questions influencing the title of Pet Safety Defined.

There are so many ways that we do need to remember to safeguard our pets. And with Halloween celebrations, we need to be doubly aware of people and noises that may upset our pets and trigger anxiety issues.

Anxiety Relief

Does you fur bud run when visitors appear or hide or show aggressive behavior? Maybe your best pet friend needs an anxiety vest or a calming cbd chew. Have you checked all these great USA anxiety products out? How about a puzzle treat or treat toy for their separation anxiety?

Cat in Anxiety Vest 315 x 320

How about checking with your vet for needed vaccinations and preventitive meds, like flea and tick collars or sprays, ear and eye wipes, glucosamine.

Dental care is a number one health issue for our furry friends. Have you checked out all the available dental products and reviews? Take a gander at Dental Care for our Fur Babies.

Safety in food choices is a major item also. USA-made with natural ingredients is best. Have you looked through the ingredient list on your pet’s food? The same guidelines apply to their treats. If they are having trouble eating, do they need mainly soft foods?

Another good safety measure is to check the FDA.gov site for recall information on pet foods or subscribe to the Dog Food Advisor.com recall email notices for both dogs and cats. Even most reliable pet food companies run into trouble at times and will submit a voluntary recall.

Also take a look at the list of bad foods and good foods for your fur buds here: Pet Poison Prevention Awareness. Some inexpensive and natural treats can be found in these lists for both your cats and your dogs.

Pet Insurance is pretty much a must these days with vet prices. See a list of recommended insurers in my last post entitled: Pet Insurance Update– It is a Must!

Property Safety Inside & Out

It is time to check your yard, fences, gates for any needed repairs. Have you considered a Catico to keep your cat happy and safe outside? Inside it is good to check on cords or cupboards accessible to pets and secure them from getting into any hazardous areas or products. A quick trip to the hardware store may be in order for a simple door latch or cord enclosure product.

On that note, do you have a pet gate to keep your doggy out of a particularly dangerous pet area in your home.

Does your pet have an ailment making it hard to climb. Or is arthritis and aging asking too much of them? Have you checked out pet stairs? See Pet Stairs – Reviewed.

Riding and Walking Considerations

Is your leash, collar, and/or harness in good condition. Is your ID tag up to date?

Have you invested in a safety tested car carrier, and safety harness? And, does your fur buddy need a ramp to help entering and exiting your vehicle?

Dog Ramps 315x315

Are you aware of the GPS collars available to track your pet if lost and the apps available thru Petco for same?

In cold or hot weather, booties protect your animals paws from frost in winter and from hot tarmack in summer. Another helpful alternative is paw wax. And, since our pets are living inside, warm and wet weather gear is also in order. See Fur Baby Walks. Also check Fall Winter Pet Gear.

Are you a boat owner ? Do your animals like playing in the water? Have you purchased floatation devices for them?

Stranger Danger

If you know someone unfamiliar to your pet is due to visit and, in this circumstance your fur baby is uneasy or overly protective, perhaps a temporary muzzle or other restraint might be in order. A temporary enclosed space would be a solution. Or, if it is just an anxiety issue, time to break out the anxiety vest or a calming chew. Halloween is a definite example of ‘stranger danger’ with noisy trick or treaters ringing your doorbell in masks and unusual apparel!

Pet Insurance Update

Pet at Vet pexels 600 x 551

Since September is Pet Insurance Month, I am going to follow here with some good information for your pet insurance update. Unfortunately, this is something we don’t really want but is a definite need today for our pet meds and healthcare costs.

There are two review sites I am referencing. Forbes and ConsumersAdvocate.org. They both share comparison info on their top rated pet insurance companies. Following is an overview of their findings and a good starting point to choose your best pet insurance option.

2023 Pet Insurance Reviews

Both Forbes and Consumers Advocate choose SPOT as their number one pet insurance company. Forbes gives Spot a 5 rating and Consumers Advocate favors a 4.5 rating. Some of their decisions rest on Spot’s 30 day money back guarantee with up to 90% reimbursement options, wide deductible choices, and the opportunity to adjust coverages to fit your budget.

Forbes continues their second, third, fourth, and fifth choice insurers with the same 5 rating score as Spot. Embrace is second, chosen for their wide coverage options. And, Embrace is also Consumer Advocate’s second choice with their 4.5 rating and a noted Wellness Reward Plan available over a 12-month period.

Review Differences

This is where the two reviewers start to differ. Forbes places Healthy Paws Insurance in their 3rd position with a 5 rating and say they were chosen because of their unlimited annual coverage and availability of alternative therapies.

In fourth place for Forbes is Paw Protect with their instant direct payment to vets and option of a $5000 interest-free line of credit. Before checking out all their information that point might just push me in their favor.

And number five for Forbes is Many Pets, also given a 5 rating, and chosen as a new player with good coverage features and competitive pricing.

Here Consumer Advocates places Pets Best as their number three pick with their 4.0 rating and comprehensive coverage at affordable prices. Next is Fetch, rated 4.5, which they show as the most comprehensive coverage for cats and dogs. And, as number 5, Lemonade is shown for their coverage starting as low as $10 per month.

What is a complete diversion in choices between Forbes and Consumers Advocate is Forbes has Pets Best at a 4.5 rating but as their 8th pick while this company is Consumers Advocate’s 3rd choice but only a 4.0 rating.

Forbes 3rd, 4th, and 5th picks are not mentioned by Consumers Advocate. But Consumers Advocate’s 3rd and 4th choices, Pets Best and Fetch, are mentioned by Forbes. Fetch is number 6 with a 4.5 rating by Forbes, and, as noted above, Pets Best is Forbes number 8 choice.

All in all it appears there are quite a few good companies available to insure our pets. It just comes down to which options the particular company offers that works best for your best pet friends and your budget. So do take some time to look over all the possibilities offered to insure your pet buds.

Take a look at last year’s pet insurance reviews for more information in “Insure your Pet” and the 2021 picks shown in “Protection for Pets“.

October is almost here which is designated as our Pet Safety and Protection Month. So what better time to set up your pets’ safety net with some protective insurance for them as well as yourselves.

Petco News for Lost Pets

Pet Business reported recently on Petco’s new reporting app to help find our lost pets. It was in their August 2023 issue linked for your information here: Petco partners with Ring to locate lost pets. It sounds like a great app to take advantage of if needed or also to help a friend or relative with a lost pet friend. Take a look.

Pet Food Recalls

Remember to check our FDA.org site for information frequently as it appears more recalls have recently been occurring. Note that Dog Food Advisor does offer an email recall notice subscription and they do have both dog and cat food info at present.
